In this colleague journey, we hear from Morgan, who at the time of filming was the Service Manager of our Middlewich services and has since progressed to managing our Burton-on-Trent and Stoke services.

Morgan’s path into social care has been varied and inspiring. Before joining ISL, he worked as a lifeguard for seven years before studying Clinical and Health Psychology at Bangor University. Wanting to gain hands-on experience after graduating, Morgan briefly worked in domiciliary care before finding his place within supported living at ISL.

Starting as a Support Worker across our Middlewich and Crewe services, Morgan quickly progressed into a Deputy Manager role within one of our forensic services before stepping into an Acting Service Manager position just months later.

Throughout the interview, Morgan speaks about the realities of working within mental health supported living, including the importance of communication, resilience, leadership, and remaining calm under pressure.

During filming, an incident occurred involving a client experiencing a schizophrenic episode. The situation was safely managed with support from the police, who were able to help de-escalate the situation as the client felt most comfortable communicating with them at the time. Thankfully, no one was harmed and the client is now doing well. We chose to include a small part of this in the video as it reflects the real-life challenges that can sometimes arise within mental health services and the importance of teamwork, professionalism, and person-centred support.

Alongside the day-to-day challenges, Morgan also shares what he enjoys most about the role and the skills he believes are important for anyone considering a career in management within social care.

Before joining ISL, Nicole worked in retail from the age of 16, where she developed a range of valuable skills including communication, teamwork, and customer service. She talks about how these skills have supported her transition into a career in care and helped her build strong relationships with the people she supports.

Nicole shares what she enjoys most about her role, highlighting the variety each day brings. Alongside important responsibilities such as completing My Star assessments, support plans, and risk assessments, she also values the more enjoyable aspects of the job—spending meaningful time with clients, going on day trips, and supporting individuals to access the community, including visits to places like bookshops and local activities.

For Nicole, the balance between structured, person-centred work and fun, engaging activities is what makes the role so rewarding.

After serving 12 years in the Army, Saul discovered a new passion during his transition to civilian life — mental health support.

Starting as a Bank Support Worker, Saul joined Independence Support (ISL) determined to use both his lived experience and professional background to make a difference. Just 18 months later, he is now Deputy Service Manager at our Middlewich Supported Living services.

Meet Mo – our incredible Service Manager at Chester!
After starting out in Rapid Response, Mo joined the Chester team to work more closely with clients on their recovery journeys. His passion and creativity shine through in everything he does – from introducing boxing sessions that are helping clients grow stronger physically and mentally, to stepping into the ring himself earlier this year and raising over £1,000 for our charity partner, Live Cheshire.
