Rory’s Story: Growing in Confidence With the Right Support
When Rory first joined ISL a year ago, he had been through a difficult chapter of his life. After experiencing addiction and several hospital mental health admissions, he felt unsure about his next steps and lacked confidence in himself and his future.
Rory explained that when he arrived, he was very shy and found it hard to open up. What made the biggest difference for him was ISL’s approach to support — taking things at his pace, giving him time, and never pushing him beyond what he was ready for.
One of the first turning points was getting his medication stabilised, which helped him feel more grounded day-to-day. But just as important, he says, was the way staff worked with him rather than for him.
“They didn’t push me. They let me do things in my own time. That made me more open to change because I didn’t feel forced.”
Over the past year, Rory has grown in confidence, built trust with the team, and started to feel genuinely positive about his progress. He now enjoys the variety in each day and says that being with ISL has helped him “come out of his shell” more than he ever expected.
Rory’s journey is a powerful reminder of how person-centred support — delivered with patience, consistency and respect — can create the right environment for people to take meaningful steps forward.
We’re incredibly proud of Rory and everything he’s achieved so far.
