Exploring Inclusion Through Cycling: Our Visit to Live! Cheshire’s Adapted Bikes Project

Written by: ISL

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the pleasure of visiting our charity partner Live! Cheshire to learn more about their fantastic Adapted Bikes Project – a truly inspiring initiative helping people of all abilities experience the joy and freedom of cycling.

Our visits took us from learning about the different adapted bikes available, to hearing powerful stories of progress, and finally to meeting another brilliant local charity that shares the same building – The Bren Project.

Here’s a look back at our three-part video series 👇

Part 1: Trying out the Adapted Bikes with Paralympian Andy Small

We kicked off our visit on a sunny day with Paralympian Andy Small, who currently works with our Crewe service. Andy tested out a few of the adapted bikes — including the hand bike, tandem cycle and wheelchair cycle — and met some of Live! Cheshire’s regular members (and star cyclist Angel!) who showed us just how fast and skilled they are on two wheels.

Part 2: Learning More with Project Co-ordinator Billy

Next, we caught up with Billy, Live! Cheshire’s Adapted Bikes Project Co-ordinator, who gave us a guided look at some of the bikes available and explained how they’re used.

We were particularly impressed by the Tandem Cycle, which allows a client to pedal alongside a support worker or Live! Cheshire member – an incredible way to build confidence, connection and independence.

Part 3: Meeting The Bren Project

To wrap up our visit, we also spent time with The Bren Project, another wonderful charity based in the same building as Live! Cheshire.

The Bren Project offers supported, bespoke work placements for people with learning disabilities and autism in Chester and the surrounding area – empowering individuals to gain skills and confidence in a supportive environment.

Their Bren Bikes workshop refurbishes and repairs bicycles, offering affordable bikes for sale while providing meaningful work experience.

A Shared Commitment to Inclusion and Opportunity

Both Live! Cheshire and The Bren Project embody what community collaboration is all about – creating spaces where everyone can thrive, learn and feel valued.

We’re so proud to work alongside charities like these and to see first-hand how creativity, inclusion and partnership can make such a lasting impact.
